Lt. Gov. John Fetterman and his wife Gisele are supporting CORE’s Just One campaign.

The Center for Organ Recovery and Education (CORE) is encouraging people to invite just one person to register to become an organ donor.

Through the Just One campaign, CORE, an organ procurement organization, is taking to social media to spread the word about organ donation. Each day, CORE asks people to tag just one friend who falls into one of several unique categories — like one tall person, one foodie or one mother — to urge them to register as an organ donor.

“The driving initiative behind everything we do is to save and heal lives through donation,” CORE Spokeswoman Katelynn Metz said. “We’re hoping that this campaign will encourage people to register as organ, tissue and cornea donors.”

Each donor can save up to eight lives and heal up to 75 more through organ, tissue and cornea donations, she said.

Byhaving just one person register as an organ donor, Metz said, many lives can be impacted.

That’s the premise behind their social media campaign, which features a number of local influencers and public figures, including Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, comedian Matt Light and American Idol contestant Althea Grace, whose daughter received a liver transplant at age 2.

“We wanted to get some local figures that have large followings to reach their followers, too,” said Andy Nichols, CORE’s digital content coordinator.

This is the second year CORE has launched the social media movement. Last year’s campaign garnered over 1.2 million impressions on social media, Nichols said.

So far during this year’s campaign, 23 people have registered as organ donors, he said.

“Last year performed so well and we saw the influence these local individuals can have,” Nichols said. “Everybody knows just one person that fits each of these personas. That’s really all it takes.”

There are over 100,000 people nationwide waiting for an organ transplant, according to CORE.

The Just One campaign will continue next week on CORE’s Twitter, Instagram and Facebook accounts.
