Somerset County is adopting a new emergency notification system that will allow residents and businesses to receive telephone calls, texts or emails about disasters and emergencies.

The county Department of Emergency Services launched the use of CodeRED over the weekend and will test it at 3 p.m. March 19 to validate phone numbers that are in the emergency notification database.

CodeRED, a mass notification service provided by the Ormond Beach, Fla.-based OnSolve LLC, allows users to sign up for the alerts they wish to receive. County residents should not assume they are in the database and can register at

The county also may activate CodeRED to send general notifications on non-life-threatening matters, such as planned road closures, water main repairs, and water and power service interruptions.

Westmoreland and Fayette counties began using the service in 2018.
