State police in Southwestern Pennsylvania saw no fatal crashes, but put 65 DUIs and 63 nonfatal crashes on the books during New Year’s weekend 2022-23.

There were two fatal crashes elsewhere in the commonwealth. DUI arrests and nonfatal crashes across the state increased over the 2021-22 holiday.

The numbers reflect state police cases and do not include those handled by other law enforcement.

In Southwestern Pennsylvania, state police’s Troop D region had the most DUIs.

The region — which includes part of Allegheny County and Armstrong, Butler, Beaver, Lawrence and Mercer counties — saw 28 DUIs handled by state police.

State police reported 23 DUIs in the Troop A region — comprised of most of Westmoreland County, most of Indiana County, and Cambria and Somerset counties.

The Troop B region — which includes most of Allegheny County, part of Westmoreland County, and Washington, Greene and Fayette counties — reported 14 DUIs.

The most nonfatal crashes stemmed from the Troop A region at 29. The Troop B region reported 18 and D reported 16.

Per state police data, the Harrisburg region led the state in DUIs at 47, while the Philadelphia region saw the most nonfatal crashes at 116.

The National Safety Council estimates there were around 400 traffic deaths nationwide during this year’s holiday.

About half of New Year’s driving deaths are alcohol-related; the rest of the year, around 30% of driving fatalities are from drunk driving.
