It’s going to be a windy Friday across the region with gusts expected this afternoon to reach up to 50 mph, according to the National Weather Service in Moon.

Meteorologist Bill Modzelewski said those winds could result in power outages and downed trees and limbs.

A wind advisory started at 8 a.m. and will continue through midnight.

WTAE meteorologist Ashley Dougherty said the strongest winds will ramp up during the afternoon and evening, between 4 and 6 p.m.

“This is for our entire region,” she said.

High temperatures Friday are expected to hit the mid-50s, but the wind will bring with it a cold front. The windy weather is expected to dissipate overnight and move out Saturday morning in time for Pittsburgh’s St. Patrick’s Day parade.

The high temperature Saturday is forecasted to be in the high 40s, Modzelewski said.

Duquesne Light Company increased staffing this week in anticipation of Friday’s windy weather. West Penn Power has activated its around-the-clock incident command structure to help crews respond to outages.

Both companies reminded customers to be prepared for outages by making sure electronic devices are fully charged and keeping an emergency preparedness kit.
