Spring has finally arrived in Pennsylvania, and while it brings warm temperatures, there’s also the chance for some severe weather.

Thunderstorms, hail, tornadoes and heavy rain are just some possibilities across western Pennsylvania as the are transitions away from sleet and snow.

Here’s some tips on how to stay safe if severe weather hits.

Thunderstorms that produce hail of at least one inch in diameter or have wind gusts up to 58 mph are considered dangerous. The American Red Cross recommends staying indoors, away from windows and electronic devices. If you’re stuck outside, seek low ground and avoid water, trees and metal objects.

If a tornado watch or warning is issued, seek shelter in a basement, a hallway in the center of a building, bathroom or closet on the lowest floor. If a watch is issued, that means conditions are favorable for an event to occur. A warning means the weather has formed in an area and extra precautions or actions should be taken.

Heavy rains can bring floods or flash floods to an area, after rivers and streams rise. The Red Cross recommends remaining aware of your surroundings and being prepared to evacuate quickly if needed.

Don’t try and cross through floodwater. According to the organization, six inches of fast-flowing water can knock a person over. Two feet of water can float a vehicle.

A kit should be put together to prepare for the possibility of severe weather, including water, non-perishable, easy-to-open food, medications, flashlights, cellphone chargers, multi-purpose tools, copies of personal documents and emergency and family contact information.
