Trib Total Media is accepting applications for three scholarships, which provide students an opportunity to gain experience in reporting, business and marketing.

Recipients will receive scholarships and annual internships. Those who complete the program are offered full-time jobs upon graduation.

The Jim Borden Memorial Scholarship, which launched in 2019, honors former Tribune-Review Managing Editor Jim Borden. It’s open to students attending or planning to attend a four-year college or university to study journalism, English writing or communications.

The Scholarship for Diversity in Media is open to minorities as defined by the Equal Employment Opportunity Program. It aims to encourage promising young journalists from diverse backgrounds to bring their voices to local media.

“Young journalists are the heart of journalism’s future,” Tribune-Review Executive Editor Luis Fabregas said. “Our scholarship program is a crucial investment in that future. It provides a unique opportunity for them to develop their skills and their passion for innovative thinking.”

Quincey Reese, who received the Jim Borden Memorial scholarship in 2021 while studying at Penn State University, now has a full-time reporting job covering Hempfield, Greensburg, Penn Township and kindergarten through 12th grade education.

Reese said the program “felt too good to be true.”

“It’s the promise of an internship each year until you graduate — and then, after you graduate, there’s a full-time job waiting for you,” Reese said.

Knowing a full-time job offer was included, Reese said, made her feel like the company was invested in her, even as an intern. Reese said she appreciated the real-world learning experiences provided through the internship program.

“I loved my experience as an intern, and all of the editors had been so supportive and helpful to me, helping me grow as a reporter,” she said. “Truly, all of their support helped me come out of my shell and develop into a stronger reporter.”

Trib Total Media — in partnership with 535media and PrintSource — also offers The Business, Marketing & Technology Scholarship for students majoring in business, marketing, computer science, information technology or similar programs.

Applicants for all three scholarships must live in the Pittsburgh region and maintain a 3.25 GPA. Participants will receive scholarships and annual internships.

Applications are due Jan. 10 and can be submitted online.
