Trib Total Media is a finalist for three Mid-Atlantic Emmy 2022 awards.

The media company’s video titled “Olympic Oak, The Story of John Woodruff, The 1936 Berlin Olympics And The Roots of Athlete Activism” was nominated in the Diversity/Equity/Inclusion long form content category.

Another video, “Last Chance Trolley: Transforming Western Pennsylvanians Into Pittsburghers,” was nominated in the Historical/Cultural long form content category.

Trib Total Media’s “Called to Hallowed Ground” was nominated in the Human Interest long form content category.

The winners will be announced during an Oct. 1 ceremony in Philadelphia.

The story of John Woodruff showcases the Connellsville-native and his gold medal for the 800-meter track event at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Woodruff, who was Black, came from behind in the race and broke racial boundaries for his victory, joining others that year like Jesse Owens in defeating white German athletes in a blow to the Nazi myth of Aryan supremacy.

The Trib centered the documentary on a massive oak tree in Connellsville dubbed “Olympic Oak” as a storytelling device to share Woodruff’s story and his connection to Connellsville.

“Last Chance Trolley” shares the history of streetcars in the Pittsburgh region and their ubiquity. By interviewing longtime Pittsburghers, the Trib captured the memories of trolley rides from their humble beginnings as being drawn by horses to their electrification to their nearly complete demise.

Lastly, “Called to Hallowed Ground” interviewed Pittsburgh-area residents about their experiences during the 9/11 tragedy, sharing their stories about the Twin Towers and the Pentagon the day the planes stuck.

Producers on the three videos include Sean Stipp, Chris Benson, Jason Cato, and Paul Guggenheimer.

Trib Total Media started producing documentaries in 2021 and was nominated for two Emmys that year.
