Two schools in Indiana County were temporarily locked down Wednesday afternoon as state police investigated reports of a shooting at an apartment in Homer City, state police said.

Trooper Clifford Greenfield said Homer City Police and state police responded to reports of a disturbance and shooting in an apartment on North Main Street in the borough just after 12:30 p.m.

“As a precaution, Homer-Center School District (the elementary school and high school) was placed in lockdown for about an hour while law enforcement responded,” Greenfield said.

Greenfield said that there is “no threat” to the community, but the investigation is ongoing.

Elementary school Principal Holly B. Rougeaux told parents in a letter posted on the district’s website that school security immediately secured the building and perimeter of the two schools. She said school officials also activated its “auto call to notify parents.”

At 2 p.m., she reported the precautionary lockdown was lifted by state police “and (school officials could) dismiss students under normal dismissal procedures.”

Police said interviews are being conducted, but no charges have been field.

No further information was available.
