The signage at the top of Pittsburgh’s highest skyscraper has been tinted blue to honor Cpl. Timothy O’Connor Jr., a Pennsylvania state trooper killed during a traffic stop in Chester County earlier this month, UPMC says.
The UPMC logo was set to blue Tuesday and will remain that color Wednesday, according to a social media post from the health care system.
O’Connor, 40, was killed March 8 as he approached a car he had pulled over when the driver fired from inside the vehicle, the state’s acting police commissioner, Lt. Col. George Bivens, said during a news conference, as reported by The Associated Press.
The shooter — identified by police as Jesse Nathan Elks, 32 — then got out of the car, walked a short distance away and shot and killed himself with a pistol, Bivens said.
O’Connor was a 15-year veteran of the state police who was married and had a young daughter.
Police continue to investigate the incident.
“We extend our deepest sympathy to Corporal O’Connor’s loved ones,” UPMC’s post said.
