Want to volunteer on Earth Day? Here are events happening all over Western Pennsylvania
If you’re looking for an Earth Day project, local, state, federal and nonprofit officials have plenty of them happening all across the region. Here are some of the opportunities available for volunteering:
Army Corps of Engineers
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will host several volunteer days.
A lake-shore cleanup will take place from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday at the Bush Recreation Area, 200 Boat Dock Road in New Alexandria at Loyalhanna Lake. Park staff will provide garbage bags, life jackets and safety gloves and will shuttle volunteers across the lake in pontoon boats to collect trash.
For more, call 724-639-9013.
A second Friday event will be held at Youghiogheny River Lake. It will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and volunteers will meet at the resource manager’s office, 497 Flanigan Road in Confluence. Staff and volunteers will relocate trees to prepare a piece of land to become a day-use area.
For details, call 814-395-3242.
Tree giveaway set in Jeannette
West Penn Power’s Green Team will host a giveaway of 300 low-growing, flowering dogwood saplings to interested residents from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the Jeannette Greenspaces community garden at the corner of Clay Avenue and Seventh Street.
Nature walks
The Westmoreland Land Trust on Friday will host a 1 p.m. wildflower walk and a 7 p.m. twilight exploration of Blue Dell Run at the Otto and Magdalene Ackermann Nature Preserve.
The 1 p.m. walk will traverse the level Old Dirt Road Trail, descending the steep but short Wedding Trail to view waterfalls and spring flowers. Wear shoes that can get muddy.
The 7 p.m. walk will descend the Wedding Trail to explore the stream banks of Blue Dell Run, and amphibian expert Aaron Capouellez will guide a search for creek inhabitants. Bring a flashlight, and wear shoes that can get muddy.
All ages are welcome. Each walk will last 2 to 3 hours.
The preserve is on Leger Road, and trust officials remind the public the Ardara Road/PA-993 bridge is closed, so the reserve can be reached by turning east onto Route 30 from the Route 48 intersection, turning left onto Leger Road and following signs for the reserve.

Millvale cleanup
The Millvale Community Development Corp. will host a volunteer clean-up morning Saturday in the borough, followed by an afternoon celebration with food and music.
Volunteers will meet between 8 and 9 a.m. at the Millvale Community Center, 418 Lincoln Avenue. Volunteers will divide into four projects doing street cleanup, playground prep work, cleanup at the Millvale library and trail building in Girty’s Woods.
Protective equipment, trash bags and high-visibility vests will be provided based on the project. Afterward, participants are invited to a celebration at the site of the borough’s future playground with food, live music and vendors.

Electronics collected at the event will be recycled by Westmoreland Cleanways and Recycling. Televisions of any size will be accepted, as long as they are not smashed or broken.
Murrysville reserve work day
The Murrysville-based Westmoreland Conservancy is seeking volunteers to help with litter cleanup, trail work and removal of invasive plants beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday at Flinn Nature Reserve.
Participants will meet at the site’s parking lot on Boxcartown Road, a quarter mile from the intersection of School Road South. They may bring tools for trimming vegetation and are encouraged to wear gloves, long pants and sturdy foot gear.

Electric vehicles highlighted
Owners who want to display their electric vehicles and others who want to get a close-up look at the cars are invited to attend Drive Electric Earth Day Pittsburgh, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
The free event will take place in the parking lot of First Presbyterian Church of Murrysville, 3202 North Hills Road, Murrysville.

Other projects
Outside of volunteer projects, nonprofit groups and colleges will be out and about doing service work and educating the public about the importance of nature and conservation:
• Seton Hill University students will be part of eight service projects including planting and cleanup at Caritas Christi in Greensburg, litter cleanup on the Twin Lakes Park area, working at Smithton Borough’s pollinator habitat and helping at the university’s garden and greenhouse.
• At Conemaugh River Lake in Saltsburg, Greensburg Central Catholic students will assist U.S. Army Corps of Engineer staff with trail maintenance, installing signs and assembling bat boxes.
• At Crooked Creek Lake in Ford City, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir staff will join West Penn Power and public volunteers to plant tree saplings throughout the park.
