Nicholas Cumer

A Washington High School graduate was among the nine killed in a mass shooting at a Dayton, Ohio, bar early Sunday.

Nicholas Cumer, 25, graduated from the Washington school in 2012, his family said.

“We are heartbroken by the loss of our Nicholas in this senseless act on August 4,” Cumer’s family said in a statement. “As our family grieves, we ask for privacy at this time.”

Cumer was a graduate student in the Master of Cancer Care program at St. Francis University, according to a statement from university president the Rev. Malachi Van Tassell. He was in Dayton for an internship with the Maple Tree Cancer Alliance.

He’d earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Francis as well.

“Nicholas was dedicated to caring for others,” Tassell wrote, noting he was recognized at the university’s 2019 Community Engagement Awards for completing more than 100 hours of community service.

“We join the nation in mourning Nicholas, alongside all the victims of this tragedy,” Tassell wrote.

He said a memorial Mass will be held on campus later this week.
