The Washington Salvation Army is hosting a Superhero Drive-Thru event to raise funds for back-to-school supplies for local students in need.

The event is scheduled from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. July 11 at Camp Agape in Hickory.

During the event, children can meet their favorite superheroes and princesses, take home a treat bag, and explore Camp Agape’s scenic trails.

Washington Salvation Army will also welcome their real-life super heroes — local first responders.

“This event will be fun for the whole family, while also giving everyone the chance to maintain social-distancing, and support a wonderful cause,” Captain Amber Imhoff, commanding officer of the Washington Salvation Army Worship and Service Center, said. “We encourage families to come out, meet their heroes, and take home a treat bag. In today’s world, we know the extra stress people face, and hope the Superhero Drive-Thru will provide a light-hearted getaway for the afternoon.”

There is no fee to attend, but the Salvation Army encourages a donation of any amount to support the purchase of back-to-school items for students.

A $25 donation pays for a backpack and school supplies, while a $60 donation supplies new shoes for a student, according to the Salvation Army. Any donation will directly help a local child preparing to return to school in the fall.

Funds raised by the event will be used to purchase backpacks, essential school supplies, and shoes for children whose families have been financially impacted by the covid-19 pandemic.

Last year, the Washington Salvation Army provided 409 backpacks full of school supplies for local kids. They also donated 300 teacher supply boxes to eight schools and 207 vouchers for new shoes for children. Plus, they had 79 volunteers coordinate back-to-school shopping trips.

The Washington Salvation Army is accepting donations online or at 60 East Maiden Street, Washington PA, 15301.
