Pa. Turnpike tragedy: 5 dead in ‘horrific incident’ that could take weeks to investigate

Five people died and 60 others were injured when a tour bus traveling along the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Mt. Pleasant on Sunday hit an embankment, flipped on its side and was struck by two tractor trailers and a car.

The driver and a passenger in one of the trucks as well as the bus driver and two passengers died.

New Westmoreland County sheriff finds offices trashed

Newly installed Westmoreland County Sheriff James Albert found a surprise when he arrived at work Monday morning.

Stacks of boxes filled with old arrest warrants blocked the door to his administrative suite of offices, trash was strewn on floors and desks, and the former sheriff’s dirty uniforms were piled beneath a DVD of the movie “Paul Blart: Mall Cop.”

Rostraver West Newton paramedic killed on I-70 remembered as dedicated, compassionate

A paramedic supervisor responding to a crash on Interstate 70 on Sunday was struck by a vehicle and killed.

Matt C. Smelser, 44, of Charleroi, was responding to a crash about 5:30 a.m. west of the Smithton Exit in South Huntingdon when he was fatally struck by a tractor-trailer after he got out of the ambulance, according to state police.

He was a 24-year veteran of the Rostraver-West Newton Emergency Medical Service

Pittsburgh rapper Mac Miller’s family announces release of new album

The family of late Pittsburgh rapper Mac Miller announced Wednesday that a new album titled “Circles” will be out Jan. 17.

The recording is a companion album to “Swimming,” which was released in August 2018 — a little less than a month before the artist died of a drug overdose.
