The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy is accepting applications for projects to improve access for anglers, canoeists and kayakers to streams, lakes and rivers in Western Pennsylvania.

The grants from the conservancy’s Canoe Access Development Fund provide technical assistance and grants of up to $5,000 to build and enhance canoe and kayak access locations. The money can be used to stabilize access areas to rivers or streams, create nearby parking areas, buy riverside access or for other improvements.

The conservancy said the canoe access funds have supported 94 projects on 38 waterways in 24 counties in the region.

Susan Huba, executive director of Loyalhanna Watershed Association in Ligonier, said the organization used a 2023 grant to improve and repair existing launch access sites on Loyalhanna Creek, at the Loyalhanna Nature Trail, Idlewild Hill access and Mission Road access.

An application with a list of requirements is available at the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy website. Applications must be postmarked by Nov. 20. Recipients will be notified by Dec. 18.
