Residents rally in Downtown Pittsburgh on Monday to protest ICE actions in Los Angeles.

Cities across the United States will gather Saturday for a No Kings Day protest against the Trump administration — and Pittsburgh is no exception.

On that day — President Donald Trump’s 79th birthday — thousands of people are expected to rally outside the City-County Building on Grant Street in demonstration against the president and his administration’s immigration crackdown.

Protests in Greensburg also are planned.

There are several events happening in Greensburg around the same time as a No Kings protest, at noon at the Westmoreland County Courthouse courtyard. Extra police officers will be available, said Greensburg police Chief Charles Irvin. They’ll be working throughout town with Westmoreland County Park Police, state police and Westmoreland SWAT.

The 50501 Movement, an organization founded to protest Trump during his second presidency, began its discussion about holding 50 protests across 50 states in one day in a Reddit thread, which spread rapidly, according to its website. Those protests in April were called Hands Off.

Saturday’s demonstration in Pittsburgh, scheduled for 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., is in response to what organizers call “increasing authoritarian excesses and corruption from Trump and his allies.”

The 50501 Movement, along with other grassroots organizations including Indivisible, Casa San Jose and Women for Democracy, is encouraging participants to bring American flags, stating on the No Kings website that the flag belongs to the people — not to Trump.

Around the same time Saturday, tanks and artillery launchers are expected to roll through Washington, D.C., as part of a parade honoring the Army’s 250th anniversary, which falls on Trump’s birthday.

‘Our right to protest’

Jaime Martinez, 23, a member of Casa San Jose, is expected to speak at Saturday’s rally.

“Our community deserves to know what is happening to our neighbors,” Martinez said.

Nine members of Socialist Alternative also plan to attend the protest. Steve Capri, 39, said they’ll be walking around with clipboards, encouraging people to sign.

Cas Borowitz, 22, of Squirrel Hill said she hopes to attend.

“I really think it is important to continue to utilize our right to protest,” Borowitz said.

Greensburg protest

In Greensburg, Irvin said, there will be officers on the ground as well as on nearby rooftops to help authorities identify any potential threats and protect protesters’ rights and the enjoyment of all visitors, regardless of what event they’re attending.

“We are having so many people downtown, so many diverse groups. … We just want to make sure we have a bird’s eye view of what’s going on,” he said.

Other events planned Saturday in Greensburg include Summer in the City, an attempt to break a world record and a craft beer festival.

Other No Kings protests are planned in Mt. Lebanon, Washington County, Cranberry Township and Beaver County. Protests also are taking place in Philadelphia and the Harrisburg area.

“We’ve watched as they’ve cracked down on free speech, detained people for their political views, threatened to deport American citizens and defied the courts,” reads a website for No Kings. “No Kings is a nationwide day of defiance. From city blocks to small towns, from courthouse steps to community parks, we’re taking action to reject authoritarianism — and show the world what democracy really looks like.”
