Zelienople Council voted Monday to cancel its public Memorial Day service, July 4th parade and fireworks and its annual Horse Trading Days slated for July 16-18.

Council said in a news release that it “made some very difficult decisions given the covid-19 situation and felt it was in the best interest of the community” to cancel the events.

The Memorial Day event was to be May 25 and regularly includes an 11 a.m. service to honor veterans at Memorial Park on Main Street. Council also said its July 4 festivities, which include a parade, fireworks and park activities is also canceled.

The three-day Horse Trading Days festival annually draws about 40,000 people into the Butler County borough.

“It is with heavy heart that this decision was made given the historical, economic and social value these events have to our borough, and we know how important they are to the very fabric of what Zelienople is, but it was a decision that needed to be made to insure public safety at this time,” council said in the release.
