After 24 years of service to Richland Township, Jerry Reichart is resigning from his position as public works director.

His last day of work will be June 14. The board of supervisors accepted his resignation at their meeting on May 1.

The board also appointed Mike Kuhn as an interim public works director, effective through June 14, when Kuhn will take over as the new department head at an annual salary of $89,000.

“This is sad news. Jerry’s been a real asset and a great person to work with all of these years,” township manager Dean Bastianini said. “He’s made really important and valuable contributions to Richland Township and he’s done it with a great attitude.

“Jerry has the respect of the men that he works as well as the respect of the board,” Bastianini continued. “When he came to you and asked you to support and devote major dollars to purchase expensive equipment, the board always took Jerry’s recommendation. We had the confidence that he was going to take good care of that piece of equipment and handle it properly. It’s a bittersweet moment. I’m happy for Jerry,”

Bastianini then read a letter from Reichart addressed to the board of supervisors:

“For the past 24 years, it has been my honor to serve the residents of Richland Township under the guidance of the township manager and the board of supervisors. Your support has allowed me to enjoy a very satisfying, rewarding career, and for that I will always be grateful.”

Reichart wrote that he wants to spend more time with his family and friends.

“I have been blessed to have worked with a great crew of competent and dedicated men for all these years, and I’m saddened to part from this cherished relationship with all my work family. However, I feel that it is time for me to move on to the next stage of my life. There will always be a special place in my heart for all of you,” the letter concludes.

Reichart started working in 1975 as a laborer in Ohio Township’s public works department. In 1977, he was hired as a part-time police officer, serving for 11 years.

After leaving the police department, he worked in the public works department for Franklin Park. He then transitioned to the zoning department, spent time as the borough’s building inspector and later became borough manager.

When Richland’s previous public works director retired, Reichart filled the space and has been with the township ever since.

“It’s one of the best things that’s ever happened to this township,” board of supervisors chairman Ray Kendrick said of Reichart’s hiring.

“They don’t make them like you anymore, Jerry,” Bastianini said.

Bastianini then introduced the new public works director. Kuhn has been with the department for eight years.

“In the interviewing process, Mike’s experience in running large construction and work crews and his knowledge of public works techniques and procedures made him stand out. I’m excited about his promotion to this position. I think he’s going to be an excellent public works director. Jerry will spend time with him between now and when he retires and tell him his secrets and the way things work. I think this was a great recommendation and I’m very pleased that he’s agreed to accept the position,” Bastianini said.

Kuhn thanked his predecessor.

“Ray said that he’s been coming into work with a smile for the past two weeks because of his retirement, but Jerry’s been coming into work with a smile for the last eight years,” Kuhn said. “He’s been a joy to work for and work with. I’m going to try really hard to follow in his footsteps and have that positive attitude that we’re all looking for around here.”
