Riverview Junior-Senior High School students are in remote learning mode until Thursday because of a second positive covid-19 case at the school, district officials announced.
A new state mandate requires schools to switch to a virtual learning model for every two cases of covid-19 in a school building, according to a letter posted on the district website and social media page.
Students are scheduled to return to in-person instruction Thursday.
In early November, Riverview went to a hybrid model after starting the school year fully remote.
Leaders thought it was the right move because they said evidence provided by the Allegheny County Health Department suggested the virus is being spread more through community transmission than in school.
When a positive case is reported to school officials, they contact Allegheny County to pursue contact tracing and notify families that are deemed to have been in close contact with those infected.
According to the district’s letter to families, there is a very low likelihood that a close contact would occur in school because of the precautions in place that include masks and social distancing.
“Please hunker down, be safe and wear your masks,” the letter said.
The building will be disinfected before students and staff return.
