Families are invited to an open house for Providence Heights Alpha School, at 9000 Babcock Boulevard in McCandless, on Feb. 26, from 1 p.m to 3 p.m.

Established in 1926, the private, PreK4 through 8th grade elementary school provides a Catholic education, preparing students for high school and beyond.
The school was founded and is sponsored by the Sisters of Divine Providence.
• Nine Providence Heights Alpha students competed at the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Sciences competition Feb. 4 at Baldwin High School. First Place award winners were: Ainsley Cook-Baldauf, Isabela Oviedo, Aine Corrigan, Dylan DeVore, Lily O’Neill and Eva Palladino. Second Place award winners were: Claire Anthony, Tessa Burns, and Ainsley Kelman.
Aine Corrigan and Dylan DeVore won special awards from the Keep America Beautiful organization; Eva Palladino received a certificate from the American Vacuum Society; and Lily O’Neill won the prestigious Director’s Award, along with a $100 prize.
The team was led by middle school science teacher Linda Cessar.
• The Western PA Writing Project from the University of Pittsburgh is hosting its 10th annual Young Writers’ Institute from 9 a.m.-noon the week of June 19-23 at the Sing Sing Sing Studio in Wexford.
The program is for rising fifth through eighth graders. Scholarships are available if needed. The institute will host Pittsburgh Area Young Adult Fiction Writer Caroline Carlson.
