Multiple people were injured Thursday night after five vehicles were involved in a crash in Wilkinsburg.
According to TribLive news partner WTAE, several police cars and ambulances reported to the area near Penn Avenue and East Swissvale Avenue around 10 p.m. One vehicle could be seen on its side.
Pittsburgh police said detectives made a traffic stop at a different location, and the vehicle fled. Police said they did not chase the vehicle. Officers later came upon the crash and recognized the car.
Pittsburgh City Councilman Khari Mosley said in a post of Facebook that he was on scene of the accident. He said when the driver fled from the traffic stop, police followed city policy by not pursuing in a high-speed chase.
He said the driver collided with four other vehicles at the intersection of Penn Avenue and East Swissvale Avenue. Mosely represents Pittsburgh’s ninth district.
Police have not identified the driver or said why the vehicle was initially pulled over by detectives.
An emergency dispatcher told WTAE there were eight people injured; police said there were no critical patients.
