An igloo created on a Sewickley street a couple days after a winter storm dropped a foot of snow in the area was demolished by borough public works crews for safety reasons.
The dome-shaped creation was discovered as crews were removing snow near the intersection of Centennial Avenue and Fountain Street on Jan. 27.
Police responded to the area, but could not find the igloo’s architects.
Police Chief Dave Mazza said the issue was not with its creation, but its location.
“It did present a safety concern,” Mazza said Jan. 28.
“I would like to credit the young individuals responsible for building it, because I believe they have a future in engineering,” Mazza said. “You could tell they put a lot of work into building it and did a good job at it.”
The chief warned that igloos and other snow creations in the street create safety hazards.
Public works crews may knock it down or a car could slide into it while kids are playing inside.
The chief said people who want to play or build in the snow should do so in their yards and not on the roads.
“We want our kids to have fun and be safe at the same time,” Mazza said.
