Fern Hollow Nature Center will host a Beekeeping 101 event in March.

Beekeeping class

Master beekeeper Steve Rapasky of Meadow Sweet Apiaries will lead the Beekeeping 101 event for beginners on 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. March 4 at Fern Hollow Nature Center. The classroom-based course will introduce beginning beekeepers to honey bee biology and beekeeping basics. Honey bee castes, races, pests, diseases, equipment and seasonal management will be covered. All registrants will receive a packet of reference materials on the topics covered in the class. The cost for Beekeeping 101 is $125 per person. Registration required at fhnc.org.

Rotary seeks new members

After winning the District Governor’s award for the best club in the area in 2022, Quaker Valley Rotary Club seeks to build on its successes to recruit a new generation of members and to expand its influence. Each year, the club hosts community events that residents love and have come to rely on. It partners with the Sewickley Kiwanis Club to put on the Harvest Festival, presents the Halloween and Santa parades, and provides scholarships to students in the school district. The club also regularly hosts social activities and engages speakers from athletes to leaders in local nonprofit organizations.

A meet and greet for prospective members will be held at China Palace in Sewickley from 6-8 p.m. March 2. All are welcome. RSVP to quakervalleyrotary@gmail.com if you would like to attend, or if you are unable to make this event and are interested in learning more.

College admissions discussion

Sewickley Academy will host New York Times best-selling author Jeff Selingo for an intimate discussion on the current landscape of college admissions. The event is free and open to the public. A book signing begins at 6 p.m. Feb. 28 in the Academy’s Rea Auditorium, followed by Selingo’s presentation at 6:30 p.m. This is a remarkable opportunity to hear directly from the author of “Who Gets In & Why: A Year Inside College Admissions,” which is a journey through the selection process from inside three admissions offices, revealing what really matters and how an acceptance decision is reached. There is no cost to participate, but you are encouraged to reserve seats in advance at https://bit.ly/Jeff_Selingo.

Meetings planned

• Leet board of commissioners will meet at 4 p.m. Feb. 27 for a workshop meeting at the township office, 194 Ambridge Ave.

• Leetsdale council will have a workshop meeting March 2 and a voting session March 9. Both meetings are set for 7 p.m. at the borough building, 373 Beaver St.

Municipal intern sought

Leetsdale officials have applied for a summer intern through the Local Government Academy’s Municipal Intern Program. The intern, if approved, would be available about 20 hours per week for a total of 400-480 hours from May 19 through the end of August. The LGA would cover half the cost of the internship, which was listed at $12 per hour for graduate students and $11 per hour for undergrads. Potential intern projects include helping with the borough website update, planning research and community outreach. The municipal intern program is supported by the state Department of Community & Economic Development, Allegheny County and the Redevelopment Authority of the County of Washington.
