CARE Workshops
Start 2022 by registering for one of Laughlin Children’s Center’s informative Care Workshops presented by Dr. Gail Mangan, a highly acclaimed adolescent psychologist.
CARE training includes an educational component and active practice for general use by adults who interact with children of all ages in various settings. Adults who are clinicians will benefit from the training, as will those in roles such as receptionist, preschool teacher, daycare provider, medical provider, parent or foster parent.
CARE is a trauma-informed, field-initiated training for nonclinical adults. Care training emphasizes principles taught in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy.
CARE utilizes the 3 P’s — Praise, Paraphrase, Point out — to connect with children and promote positive child-adult relationships. CARE training also contains techniques for giving children effective commands and a set of selective ignoring techniques to redirect problematic behaviors. Here is the upcoming schedule:
• March 10, 6-9 p.m.
• March 11, 9 a.m.-noon
• April 7, 6-9 p.m.
• April 8, 9 a.m.-noon
• May 12, 6-9 p.m.
• May 13, 9 a.m.-noon
Cost is $60 per participant. To register, visit laughlincenter.org/event or call 412-741-4087.
Preschool, kindergarten open house rescheduled
Parents and caregivers interested in learning more about preschools, childcare centers and kindergartens in the Quaker Valley area are invited to attend the Sewickley Public Library’s annual Open House. The program has been rescheduled for 6:30 p.m. March 3. Representatives from many area facilities will be available to answer questions about their programs.
The Open House is a unique opportunity for parents to investigate educational options for their children, especially because fall registration for many of these schools begins in February. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to come and meet with the teachers to learn about each facility and all of the options available to families.
There is no registration required for this event, which will be in the Children’s Department on the second floor of the Sewickley Public Library. Questions about the event can be directed to the Children’s Department at 412-741-0937.
Scholarship available
The Bob Williams Rotary Memorial Scholarship Program announces the availability of scholarships for the 2022-23 academic year. In recent years, the club has awarded at least eight scholarships at $5,000 each. High school seniors in Allegheny and Beaver counties are eligible to apply. Vocational students, G.E.D students and those attending parochial, charter and private schools are also eligible.
Students must have a 2.5 or higher GPA and also must complete an essay that highlights their community/school service as part of the application submission.
Complete application and criteria materials, including application deadline, are available on the Rotary District 7305 website, Scholarship Link or from area high school counselors.
For more information, contact Dr. Robert Arbuckle at rarbuckl@yahoo.com
Query Club
All meetings take place in the Community Room of the Sewickley Public Library from 7-9 p.m.
The Feb. 28 meeting will feature host Janet Oellig and speakers Susan Sour (Ansel Adams) and Lynne Schneider (California Gold Rush).
Quaker Valley kindergarten registration
Kindergarten registration for the 2022-23 school year in Quaker Valley School District is open. Children must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2022.
Registration form takes about 20 minutes to complete and is best done on a laptop or desktop computer.
Registering for kindergarten is not the same as Kindergarten Roundup, which is an event held in February. However, by completing the registration form, QVSD will have your contact information and will be in communication regarding KRU details.
Supporting documentation is required to register your student. This includes a copy of birth certificate or passport, physician’s office immunization records and proof of residency — utility bill (gas, electric, water, or cable), and/or a current PA driver’s license; if you are new to the area and do not have proof of residency, you may submit this information later.
You will have the option to submit all or some of the supporting documentation as an attachment to the kindergarten registration form. Otherwise, you may email the supporting documents to registration@qvsd.org after completing the registration form. For questions or more information, contact registration@qvsd.org or 412-749-5095.
Visit qvsd.org to register.

Speakers will be Brian Thomas of BT Computer Consulting Services and Michele Long of Keller Williams Realty. To attend, become a member or for more information, visit gpbc-pgh.org or call 412-364-6446 ext. 302.
