In brief: Historical Society collection, holiday closures and more in Sewickley

Sewickley Valley Historical Society is hosting a special exhibition called Vallor in the Valley this month.
It includes pieces of wartime history collected and preserved in the Collections at SVHS at 200 Broad St.
The exhibition will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday and at extended hours from 1-7 p.m. May 22.
It will also be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 25 during Memorial Day weekend and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 31 for its closing.
SVHS officials hope to add to its collection through contributions from members of the community.

Park upgrades discussed
Leet officials discussed proposed Ambridge Avenue Park upgrades on May 12.
Commissioners reviewed some engineering plans that showed a blue and green playground set.
Upgrades also include basketball and tennis court resurfacing, dek hockey and pickleball upgrades and sidewalk improvements.
The township received a $300,000 state grant last summer to fund the project. No township funding match is required.
Work is being done by Donora-based El Grande Industries and may be completed by the end of the month or early June.
Donations approved
Leet commissioners unanimously voted May 12 to donate $200 to the Leetsdale 4th of July committee and to the Sewickley Memorial Day Parade.
Library closed
Sewickley Public Library will be closed May 29 for an in-service day.
Regular programming is expected to resume at 500 Thorn St. on May 30.
Library activity planned
Sewickley Public Library will host a Sahaja meditation session from 11 a.m. to noon May 24 at 500 Thorn St.

SMC Club
SMC Club, an affiliate of the Sewickley Valley YMCA, will not have a meeting on May 23 due to Memorial Day. On May 30, historian Bob Ferguson will discuss the Battle of Agincourt in 1415 during the Hundred Years’ War. Friends of the Sewickley Public Library are holding a spring book sale 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. June 6-7 and 1-3:30 p.m. June 8. Sunday is $5 bag day.
Dig: An Evening of Jazz in the Garden
Pittsburgh Botanic Garden is hosting its fourth annual Dig: An Evening of Jazz in the Garden on June 12. The evening features an electrifying concert with the musical stylings of Benny Benack III and Benny Benack II, accompanied by Grace Elliott, Tyler Bullock, George Heid III and Caleb Tobocman. Dig promises to be an enchanting experience that brings together the best of live music and the beauty of Pittsburgh Botanic Garden. The concert will be held under the tent in the Peirce Celebration Garden, with food and beverages available for purchase.

Offices closed
Sewickley borough offices will be closed on May 26 in observance of Memorial Day.
Fern Hollow Nature Center
On select Mondays this spring and summer, Fern Hollow Nature Center is inviting children 5 and younger with their caregivers to explore local parks with educator Kara O’Neill.
The hourlong Nature and Nurture programs include a short kid-friendly hike, a nature-themed story and a simple craft. Hikes are scheduled from 10 to 11 a.m. June 23, July 28 and Aug. 18. Locations vary.
Designed to foster a love for the outdoors, Nature Night Out programs are offered on select Fridays at Fern Hollow Nature Center. Pennsylvania Master Naturalist Kristen Haas ensures that each session has the perfect blend of instruction, exploration, discovery and free play. The drop-off program is for children ages 5 to 10 and occurs on from 6 to 9 p.m. May 23, June 27, July 25 and Aug. 29.

Farmers market
The Sewickley Farmers Market runs every Saturday through November from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine, at the St. James Church parking lot.
