Senior Men’s Club

An affiliate of the Sewickley Valley YMCA, the Senior Men’s Club will host Joe Roberts, who will talk about pulmonary embolisms on March 17. On March 24, first violin chair in the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Christopher Wu will talk about a life of music and golf; and on March 31, Will Knecht will discuss Wendell August Forge. Business Connection

The Greater Pittsburgh Business Connection, a referral group of business professionals, will meet March 22 at Eat’n Park on Route 60 in Robinson for breakfast from 7:15 to 8:30 a.m. Speakers will be Brian Thomas of BT Computer Consulting Services and Michele Long of KW Realty. Kindergarten sign-up

Quaker Valley School District kindergarten registration for the 2023-23 school year is open online. The child must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1. Parents/guardians must include the child’s proof of age, proof of immunization and two proofs of residency from the family. Expired documents are not acceptable. Families can email the supporting documents to registration@qvsd.org. More information about the registration process, including forms, is available online at qvsd.org.

Meetings planned

• Sewickley Heights council will meet at 4:30 p.m. March 20 at the borough building, 238 Country Club Road.

• Glen Osborne council will meet at 7 p.m. March 21 at Osborne Elementary School, 1414 Beaver St.

• Edgeworth council will meet at 7 p.m. March 21 at the borough building, 301 Beaver Road.

Chess tournament set

The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center will host a chess tournament for K-12 students March 25 at 418 Walnut St. All participants play four games. Game times are 9:30 a.m., 10:45 a.m., 12:45 p.m. and 2 p.m. Awards will be given out to top finishers in each division. More information is available at gpchess.net/tournaments.

Navigating disinformation programs

Sewickley Public Library at 500 Thorn St. will host two special presentations about navigating disinformation.

The first program is called “Stop the Spread: How to Recognize and React to Health Misinformation.” It is scheduled for 1-3 p.m. March 22. The interactive session will give attendees tips on recognizing health misinformation, decoding whether it is true, false or somewhere in between, and prepare you to respond when you see it. The program is presented by the University of Pittsburgh Health Sciences Library System.

The second program is called “Navigating Misinformation in News and Social Media.” It is scheduled for 7-9 p.m. April 20. Jessica Ghilani, associate professor of communications at the University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg, will examine the historical framework for understanding fake news, discuss how we got to this point, and offer tips on how to develop digital media literacy skills that guard against fake news.
