Sewickley Civic Garden Council
The Sewickley Civic Garden Council is sponsoring a lunch and lecture open to the public on April 20 at Allegheny Country Club featuring Kim Eierman, author of “The Pollinator Victory Garden: Win the War on Pollinator Decline with Ecological Gardening.”
Eierman is founder of EcoBeneficial LLC, an environmental horticulturist and ecological landscape design firm specializing in native plants.
In addition to being a Certified Horticulturist through the American Society for Horticultural Science, she is an Accredited Organic Landcare Professional, a Steering Committee member of The Native Plant Center, and a member of The Ecological Landscape Alliance and Garden Communicators International.

Cleanup planned
Sewickley’s Cleanup Day is scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon April 22. Check-in is at 8:30 a.m. at the borough building, 601 Thorn St. Volunteers will receive safety vests, bags and gloves and will be assigned areas. The cleanup will take place at the parks, boat launches at Walnut and Chestnut streets, and along other roadways and alleys. Volunteers are asked to register for Earth Day so borough officials can plan for lunch, which is set for 12:30 p.m. at the borough building. The registration deadline is April 21.

Science on Screen
Science on Screen will continue at the Lindsay Theater on April 13 with the 25th anniversary edition of James Cameron’s “Titanic.” Guests will relive all the emotion and also get a fascinating science lesson from University of Pittsburgh engineering professor Dr. Brian Gleeson, who will talk about the role metals played in the sinking of the ship. Laughlin Children’s Center
Emily Weingartner, Ph.D., joined the staff of the Laughlin Children’s Center as manager of its occupational therapy department. Weingartner earned her degrees from Duquesne University and is Laughlin’s first full time manger of occupational therapy. Weingartner and her staff, Andrea Stauffer, M.S. OTR/L and Catherine Colpoys, M.S. OTR/L, are prepared to meet the increased demand for children’s occupational therapy in the region.
Top Women in Wealth Advisors Best-in-State
Local Merrill Lynch Wealth Management financial advisor Gail Costa was recently named to the 2023 Forbes “Top Women Wealth Advisors Best-in-State” list, recognizing the top women wealth advisors across the nation.
Lynch received her MBA from the University of Pittsburgh and works with the Costa Leonard Wealth management Group in Sewickley. Having begun her financial services career more than 20 years ago, Costa is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and holds a Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor designation.
Also named to the list was Katie Larsen, who lives Edgeworth and works in Sewickley as an advisor and managing director of the Larsen Group, which she founded. Since 1994, Larsen has been dedicated to bringing high net worth clients a rare combination of personalized, yet disciplined, planning-based wealth management strategies. She is an alum of the College of William & Mary where she received dual bachelor’s degrees in finance and fine arts.
Historical Society program
Sewickley Valley Historical Society will host John Poister at 7 p.m. April 19 with “Strictly Sewickley: The Village in the ’60s — A nostalgic view through restored films.”
The film-based presentation at the Old Sewickley Post Office Building will look back on the beautification efforts by the Sewickley garden clubs in the 1960s through restored films from the time.

Fern Hollow Nature Center
Little Explorers Spring Sessions will begin April 12. The eight-week-long drop-off programs are geared for children 3 to 5 years old and will take place from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Explorers will take hikes in the meadows, play in the outdoor classrooms, make nature-themed crafts, and enjoy time with friends exploring, learning and discovering. Although some time is spent indoors, the programs are geared to have children outside enjoying nature as much as possible.
Sessions will be offered at Fern Hollow Nature Center on Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning April 12 and at Ohio Township Community Park on Fridays beginning April 7 from 9:30 a.m. to noon.
Junior Explorers is a unique blend of hikes, nature lessons and play that also fosters early learning skills using the natural world, but with content geared towards older preschool and kindergarten-aged children. The eight-week-long drop-off program begins April 13, is for children 4 to 6 years old and will take place from 1:30 to 4 p.m. on Thursdays at Fern Hollow Nature Center.

Senior Men’s Club
An affiliate of the Sewickley Valley YMCA, the Senior Men’s Club will host Will Knecht, who will discuss Wendell August Forge on March 31. • Sewickley Heights council will meet at 4:30 p.m. April 17 at the borough building, 238 Country Club Road.
• Glen Osborne council will meet at 7 p.m. April 18 at Osborne Elementary School, 1414 Beaver St.
• Edgeworth council will meet at 7 p.m. April 18 at the borough building, 301 Beaver Road.
• Quaker Valley School Board will have a combined committee and legislative meeting 7 p.m. April 18 at Edgeworth Elementary School, 200 Meadow Lane. The proposed 2023-24 budget will be presented. The April 25 school board meeting is canceled.
Library block party
Sewickley Public Library hosts Block Party, a family program for children ages birth to 6 and their caregivers, is planned for 10:30 a.m. to noon April 8 at 500 Thorn St. Participants can play, build, read and learn together with blocks.
