Wild & Scenic Film Festival fundraiser
The country’s largest environmental film festival will make a stop in Pennsylvania during its nationwide tour when the Pennsylvania Resources Council hosts the “Wild & Scenic Film Festival” as a virtual fundraiser to benefit the commonwealth’s oldest grassroots environmental organization.
Serving as a festival showpiece will be “The Air That We Breathe,” a documentary short from WQED Pittsburgh that explores some of the reasons behind the city’s poor air quality rankings and introduces people and nonprofits working for change. “While the Pittsburgh region evolves into a magnet for tech, education and new business, its air quality remains stuck in the unhealthy past,” according to producer Iris Samson. In coming months, WQED will expand this 10-minute Emmy-nominated short film into a 30-minute broadcast documentary to delve deeper into the vital subject.
The Wild & Scenic Film Festival will take place 7-8:30 p.m. Oct. 15 as a live-stream event and online chat. The 90-minute event will also feature an interactive chat to encourage Pennsylvanians to become inspired to take action in their own communities after witnessing how individuals and communities around the world are taking action.
Tickets are available at prc.org/filmfestival through Oct. 15.
Fall leaf collection
Sewickley’s fall leaf collection program will begin Oct. 12 and will continue through Nov. 20, weather permitting.
Leaves are to be placed along the street line and not in the street. Placing leaves in the street can cause sewer backup and entice children to play in the leaves on the street, which creates a dangerous situation.
Brush, grass and shrubbery clippings are not to be mixed with leaves. Grass and shrubbery clippings are required to be bagged for weekly garbage collection. Branches must be cut to four-foot lengths and bundled; Waste Management, the borough’s waste collection hauler, will not pick up branches unless this is done. The borough will only pick up branches after a storm. Leaves that are not put out for collection during this time will have to be bagged for regular waste pick up.
