Leetsdale trash collection is about to get a little easier with the help of a new public works garbage truck.
The borough recently purchased a 2026 International L9 Cummins truck with a Heil body and a mechanical arm called a tipper to help with collection.
It replaces a 2012 International truck bought from the same company, Hill International.
The old truck was getting costly to maintain, including $30,000 spent last year for repairs.
Councilman James DeGori said the borough had bids from two other vendors, and Hill had the best price.
The truck cost $261,000 and is funded by a seven-year loan through Huntingdon Bank.
The vehicle was received Feb. 20.
“Purchasing this truck was a must so that our residents can continue on having our own garbage (collection), so we don’t have to sub it out and have to pay an expensive quarterly trash fee,” DeGori said. “The new truck has a four-year warranty, and we plan on purchasing an extended warranty.”
The borough is seeking grants to buy new trash cans for residents that are compatible with the truck.
It is unclear how many cans and how much money would be necessary to get everyone new bins.
