Motorists who regularly use Interstate 79 may want to consider giving themselves extra time to get where they’re going starting Tuesday, Feb. 7.

PennDOT has announced beginning on that Tuesday morning there will be daylight and overnight lane restrictions on I-79 in Glenfield, Sewickley Hills, and Franklin Park and Kilbuck, Ohio, and Aleppo townships in Allegheny County, weather permitting.

Single-lane restrictions will happen in both directions on I-79 between the Neville Island Bridge and I-279 weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and then again from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights through mid-February.

Single lane restrictions will also be in place when necessary on Friday nights from 7 p.m. until 11 a.m. Saturday morning to make way for line removal and painting and temporary barrier installation.

The barriers are being put in place for the start of southbound I-79 traffic crossover routing in mid-February.

PennDOT said it will have details before the crossover beings.

It’s all part of a $24.5 million I-79 improvement project that includes four bridge deck replacements, one bridge preservation, milling and resurfacing, five new ITS signs, guide rail improvements, improved signage and pavement markings.

Crossovers will happen on southbound I-79 for bridge deck replacement work this year while the majority of the project will take place early next year.

Email updates available

To keep motorists up to date as the work progresses, PennDOT has an email distribution list for the I-79 Neville Island Bridge rehabilitation project including traffic advisories and construction updates. Drivers can enroll by sending email addresses to stcowan@pa.gov. Write “Subscribe-I-79” in the subject line.
