Osborne and Edgeworth Elementary fifth graders and middle school sixth graders participated in the annual STEM Design Challenge on April 3.

Students from school districts throughout the region competed in the event sponsored by the Allegheny Intermediate Unit.

In this year’s challenge, elementary and middle school students focused on industry, innovation and infrastructure by designing a prototype that addresses a real-world problem related to infrastructure, transportation or urban development.

The goal was to inspire students to think about how cities, roads, bridges and systems can be built or improved to be more efficient, sustainable and accessible.

Each team had to share a blueprint of their prototype and a design notebook. They also had to give a 2-minute presentation. Judges from Thermo Fisher Scientific scored prototypes and project components, and awards were distributed to the three highest-scoring teams in each division. The Edgeworth team earned second place and the Osborne team earned first place out of 12 total teams in grades 4-5.
