CARE training including an educational component and active practice for general use by adults who interact with children of all ages in a variety of settings.

CARE is a trauma-informed, field-initiated training for nonclinical adults.

The training is not therapy but is based on principles taught in Parent Child Interaction Therapy. CARE utilizes the 3 P’s — Praise, Paraphrase, Point out to connect with children and promote positive child-adult relationships. CARE training also contains a set of techniques for giving effective commands to children and a set of selective ignoring techniques to redirect problematic behaviors.

The Laughlin Children’s Center Psychology department is offering a one-day CARE workshop for adults only, 10 a.m.-noon July 30 and Aug. 6, Aug. 12 and Aug. 13.

Solo exhibition

Pittsburgh artist and Sweetwater Center for the Arts teaching artist Brian Druckenmiller will have a diverse collection of works on display through July 31. An artist talk will take place 6-7:30 p.m. July 31.

His paintings and drawings indulge in imagination, experimentation and expression. “Once Was and May Be” showcases a progressive narrative of playfully bold influences, experiences and thought.

Druckenmiller studied advertising arts at Pennsylvania College of Technology, with minimal formal training in the fine arts. Most of what he learned was by his own hand. He spent many years traveling and after many relocations, Druckenmiller has found himself living in the heart of Pittsburgh, surrounded by inspirational people and community.

In addition to summer camps, Sweetwater offers ongoing classes and workshops for youth and adults of all skill levels and experience, as well as private lessons with professional teaching artists.
