Ambridge police, fire and other emergency responders will resume searching Tuesday for a 10-year-old boy they said fell into the Ohio River on Monday.

The boy was with his brother and a group of friends who were playing near the Ambridge Sewer Treatment Plant and the Leetsdale Boat Ramp, Tribune-Review news partner WPXI reported.

Police said the children, ages 8 to 13, walked down to the river where the victim stepped into the water and lost his shoe. He tried to grab it and was swept into the water, police said.

The boy’s brother told police he tried to retrieve him and was able to get a hold of him momentarily, but he slipped away.

“They tried to pull him back in and the grip slipped, and he never resurfaced after that,” Lt. Brian Jameson of the Ambridge police told WPXI. “It’s a tragic situation.”

Families of the children were not aware they were playing by the river, police said.

Beaver County dispatchers said they received the report at about 2:45 p.m. Monday.

Numerous dive teams, fire departments and police from Allegheny and Beaver counties searched the area for hours.

First responders told WPXI the boy was wearing a Mickey Mouse shirt and lime green shorts.
