Sewickley Music Club honors founder at end of centennial year
Board members from the Sewickley Music Club recently visited the Sewickley Cemetery over the holidays to place a wreath on the gravestone of their club’s original founder, former Sewickley native Olive Nevin.
Music Club board president Tamey Zahrobsky felt it was an important gesture to mark the close of the club’s centennial year, as well as signify their respect for Nevin’s vision and diligence in starting the club in Sewickley 100 years ago.
Nevin was a prominent figure in the music world in her day and performed all over the world as a soprano vocalist.
Zahrobsky, over her six years in the Sewickley Music Club and now as newly elected president, is working hard to preserve the history of the club. She has contacted the Sewickley Library and the Sewickley Historical Society to collaborate on past and present events and records being archived concerning the club’s existence.
The club has recently seen a spike in its membership and is hoping to continue in that trend, keeping Nevin’s pursuits alive. The club meets six times a year, bringing in both local and national musical talent to perform their highly skilled craft at events for club members.
The tradition of the performance being followed by a tea and social still continues today.
Those interested in becoming a member can contact Suzanne Fenello at 724-316-3631 or visit the club’s Facebook page, The Sewickley Music Club.
