Sewickley officials approve new public works contract

Sewickley public works employees and related administrative staff will see a bump in pay over the next few years as part of a new collective bargaining agreement.

Council unanimously approved the four-year deal at Tuesday night’s meeting.

First year wage increases are to be 2.5% followed by 2% next year, 1.5% in 2023 and 1% in 2024. Health care premium contributions will remain stagnant at 12.5%.

The contract is retroactive to the start of this year. Their last contract expired in December.

The deal impacts eight workers.

Attorney Bob McTiernan represented the borough while attorney John Eddy represented the Sewickley Employees’ Association.

“It was a good process,” McTiernan said of the negotiations. “It was cooperative and responsible. There was a really good effort on both parties.”

McTiernan said the contract also clarifies assignments of overtime and other language issues.

“I thought both sides were very, very reasonable,” Eddy said. “Very professional in their approach, and I believe that we do have a very fair agreement (and a) beneficial agreement to both sides.”

Council President Jeff Neff also commended both negotiating teams and expressed excitement for the department moving forward.

“I am so happy for them,” Neff said. “I’m happy for the borough and the taxpayers. We have an agreement for the next four years with them. We’re satisfied. They’re satisfied and I’m glad it’s over.”

The union had ratified its part of the deal prior to the council meeting.
