Sewickley officials hope to establish a permanent glass recycling location in the borough to be used by the Quaker Valley Council of Government’s recycling program.
Sites discussed by council at the Jan. 11 meeting were in Riverfront Park, the same area where recycling pop-up events took place the past couple of years.
“We know that residents want glass recycling,” council vice president Julie Barnes said. “I heard it all the time from my neighbors. It would provide a very convenient location. Because it would be a permanent site, people wouldn’t have to look at their calendars to figure out when and where to take their glass. They would always be able to take it to the same place.”
The site would be available to all Quaker Valley COG communities.
That would include Aleppo, Avalon, Bell Acres, Bellevue, Ben Avon, Edgeworth, Emsworth, Glen Osborne, Glenfield, Haysville, Kilbuck, Leet, Leetsdale, Sewickley and Sewickley Heights.
The first Riverfront Park site proposed was in the lot near the ballfields and across the street from an apartment complex.
Council members said they liked the idea because it was away from a playground. However, it was determined that the property was owned by a railroad company.
The second site, and most likely submission to the Quaker Valley COG, was closer to the park’s playground.
Barnes said it was the same location as the bins for the pop-up events.
Some council members expressed concern about broken glass.
Public works crews would be tasked to check on the site at least once a day in order to keep it safe.
Councilman Brian Bozzo lobbied for more time to discuss the issue and gather more public comment.
The issue is expected to be addressed at the Jan. 25 workshop meeting and likely voted on at the Feb. 8 meeting.
Whatever site Sewickley selects would then be a recommendation to the COG, which would make the final decision on a location within its member communities.
That decision may come as early as the Feb. 16 QVCOG meeting, though it is unclear when COG officials would make their decision.
