Sewickley Police Department trying again for its 1st Night Out

It is almost unheard of to get a second chance to make a first impression.

However, Sewickley police have that opportunity in what is expected to be the department’s inaugural National Night Out celebration.

National Night Out began in 1984 as a community-building event designed to promote police-community relationships. It is celebrated every year in most places across the country on the first Tuesday in August, according to natw.org.

Sewickley Police Sgt. Dave Yurkovac said the department attempted to host such an event last year, but it was canceled due to rain.

Officers have partnered with Cochran Hose Company firefighters to ensure the show goes on this year, rain or shine.

Sewickley Night Out is set for 6-8 p.m. Aug. 5 outside the borough building along Thorn Street.

Should bad weather arise, festivities will be moved indoors to the nearby fire station.

“This is officially the first year,” Yurkovac said. “We’re still going to have something (despite the weather). We’re planning this for the community. It’s always important to have (residents) engage with the fire, police department, first responders. This event, in particular, is to build community partnerships.

“It’s supposed to be a fun night out where people come by, hang out, grab something to eat, listen to some music, see all the first responders here in Sewickley.”

The first 100 kids at the event will receive a free backpack filled with school supplies collected by firefighters and police, including contributions from the state police.

Other activities include a performance by the band Deuces Wild, a balloon artist, and arts and crafts courtesy of Sweetwater Center for the Arts. Food trucks scheduled include Kona Ice, Tim’s Extreme Dogz and Caliente Pizza.

Yurkovac is hoping for a huge turnout and to make positive connections.

“It helps us down the road if we ever need to get information from someone; they are more likely to help us out,” he said. “They see us on the street. They recognize us from all the events that we do. This night is to share with the community. It is on us to be able to provide this. It’s like our ‘thank you’ to the community.”
