National Get Outdoors Day

In honor of National Get Outdoors Day, Fern Hollow Nature Center is hosting two community events the weekend of June 11-13. All donations made during the weekend will be matched by the Fern Hollow Nature Center board of directors and will benefit adult programming, local school field trips and more at Fern Hollow.

“For the first time in a long time, it feels like we can safely gather outdoors on our beautiful grounds and see friends,” said executive director Sam Capezzuto.

On June 11 from 6-9 p.m., Fern Hollow will host a Strolling Supper.

The adults-only (guests must be over 21), ticketed evening event will include an appetizer station, four dinner stations, dessert and an open bar. Guests will enjoy live music and yard games.

Local artist Susannah Klinvex will create a painting live at the event that will be auctioned off at the end of the night. Guests will also have a chance to win other amazing raffle items, including a catered Italian Garden Dinner at their home.

Tickets for the event are limited and are $100 per person for Fern Hollow members or $115 per person for the general public. To purchase tickets, visit www.fhnc.org.

On June 12 from 5-7 p.m., Fern Hollow will host a Family Celebration, free and open to the public. The afternoon will kick off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Natural Outdoor Classroom, which recently underwent significant renovations.

Bring the kids for an afternoon of outdoor activities, including yard games, face painting, scavenger hunts, guided meadow walks and more. Bring a picnic dinner or purchase your meal at B’s Sip of Summer food truck and desert from Sewickley Confectionery’s ice cream truck.

Due to covid restrictions, attendance will be limited. All events will follow current covid guidelines.

Child-Adult Relationship Enhancement (CARE) Workshops

CARE training including an educational component and active practice for general use by adults who interact with children of all ages in a variety of settings. Adults who are clinicians will benefit from the training, as well as those in roles such as receptionist, preschool teacher, daycare provider, medical provider, parent or foster parent.

Child-Adult Relationship Enhancement is a trauma-informed, field-initiated training for nonclinical adults. The training is not therapy but is based on principles taught in Parent Child Interaction Therapy. CARE utilizes the 3 P’s — Praise, Paraphrase, Point out to connect with children and promote positive child-adult relationships. CARE training also contains a set of techniques for giving effective commands to children and a set of selective ignoring techniques to redirect problematic behaviors.

Online education session

The Sewickley Valley YMCA, State Rep. Valerie Gaydos and the Alzheimer’s Association are co-sponsoring an online education session, “Healthy living for your brain and body,” via Zoom June 3 at noon.

The session is presented by the Alzheimer’s Association’s Dori L. Owczarzak, MS, RD, LDN. For centuries, we’ve known that the health of the brain and the body are connected. But now, science is able to provide insights into how lifestyle choices may help you keep your brain and body healthy as you age. Learn about research in the areas of diet and nutrition, exercise, cognitive activity and social engagement, and use hands-on tools to help you incorporate these recommendations into a plan for healthy aging.

The session is free and open to the public. Register at https://action.alz.org/mtg/74757374 or by calling 1-800-272-3900.
