Sewickley Public Library, 500 Thorn St., has returned to normal (pre-pandemic) business hours. It is offering limited meeting and study room spaces, and some programs are taking place in person. For more information, call 412-741-6920 or visit sewickleylibrary.org.

Upcoming programs

• Animal Sketchbook Project — Calling all artists! Check out a sketchbook and fill it with your best drawings of animals, insects and creatures. Results will be shared at the end of the summer. Available through Aug. 7.

• Henny Sinding and the Gerda III – In partnership with the Museum of Jewish Heritage – A Living Memorial to the Holocaust in New York and the Mystic Seaport Museum in Mystic, Conn., the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh is offering the opportunity to visit Mystic Harbor. In this field trip, which runs from 45 minutes to an hour, students in grades 3 and up will virtually board an historic Danish lighthouse tender that was used to save Jews, ferrying them into neutral Sweden during World War II. Participants also will learn the true story of Henny Sinding, a young woman who took incredible risks for the sake of resistance, using her father’s boat, the Gerda III, and working with its crew to save some 300 Danish Jews. Attendees will be able to view the inside of the boat, ask questions and hear from survivor Leo Goldberger, who was smuggled to safety on a Danish boat in the middle of the night. This program pairs perfectly with the novel “Number the Stars” by Lois Lowry; however, knowledge of the novel is not a prerequisite.

This program will be posted on the ACLA Youth Services Facebook page, www.facebook.com/aclayouthservices.

Book Sale donations paused

The Friends of Sewickley Library cannot accept any more donations for the September book sale at this time except for children’s books. General donations will resume after the sale, which takes place Sept. 10-12.

Sewickley StoryWalk

This summer, the Sewickley Public Library invites you to grab the family and take a stroll through one of five different community StoryWalks set up throughout the Quaker Valley. A StoryWalk places pages from a children’s picture book along a walking path so that children and their caregivers may enjoy nature and reading together.

Families can visit the five Sewickley StoryWalk sites to take a self-guided walk around the parks and read a book as they go.

Different summer-themed picture book stories are featured at each site.

At Fern Hollow Nature Center, visitors can enjoy reading “Butterflies in the Garden” by Carol Lerner. Allegheny Land Trust — Audubon Greenway’s location features “My Awesome Summer” by P. Mantis (A Nature Diary) by Paul Meisel. Visitors to Mary Roberts Rinehart Nature Park can read “In the Tall, Tall Grass” by Denise Fleming, while Ohio Township Nature Center visitors can enjoy the title “Then Comes Summer” by Tom Brenner. The Henle Park location in Leetsdale is new to this year’s Sewickley StoryWalk. Visitors to the park can read “My Busy, Green Garden” by Terry Price during their stroll.

More information can be found by calling the Children’s Department at the library at 412-741-0937.
