Shaler Area School District’s back-to-school task force will be finalizing recommendations this week on a plan for reopening.

Whether classes will be held in-person or online has yet to be decided.

One scenario would be for school to begin in person with restrictions in place, another would be a hybrid learning model. A third plan would include 100% remote learning.

The district’s plan will not be finalized for a few weeks, said Bethany Baker, communications specialist. The school board is expected to review and vote on a proposal during the Aug. 5 meeting.

The task force was created to develop options for the start of school based on reviews of subcommittees in several areas, including health and wellness, curriculum, special education, technology and transportation.

“While it is unclear when and how school buildings will be fully open, the district is committed to exploring innovative and effective solutions to help provide a full and well-rounded curriculum in environments that are safe,” Baker said.

School officials will follow guidance from the CDC and Gov. Tom Wolf, along with reviewing covid-19 case numbers from the Allegheny County Department of Health.

In nearby Fox Chapel Area, the district said it is weighing scenarios that offer both in-school and at-home learning. Families there are being asked to complete surveys, and a coalition was formed to identify challenges and develop plans.

Shaler’s task force is comprised of groups that will work over the summer to complete a back-to-school plan.

Residents will have the chance to ask questions and provide input during upcoming town hall meetings. Dates will be posted to the district website.
