A man was in critical condition following a shooting early Saturday in Pittsburgh’s Middle Hill neighborhood.

City police responded to the 600 block of Chauncey Street to investigate three ShotSpotter alerts shortly before 1:45 a.m. totaling 17 rounds of gunfire.

Officers found a vehicle with bullet damage and multiple shell casings near Chauncey Street and Webster Avenue, according to Pittsburgh Public Safety spokesperson Emily Bourne.

Police then found a man with multiple gunshot wounds to his torso and arms several blocks away, near Wylie Avenue and Junilla Street.

An initial investigation indicates the man was returning to his vehicle when the shooting took place, Bourne said.

Officers applied chest seals and a tourniquet to the man until medics arrived. He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, where he went into surgery.

The police department’s Mobile Crime Unit responded to process evidence at the scene.

Violent Crime Unit detectives are investigating.
