Shotspotter alerts lead Pittsburgh police to shootings in East Liberty, Spring Hill
Pittsburgh police are investigating a pair of shootings on Tuesday night that occurred within an hour of each other.
Officers from the Zone 5 station responded to a Shotspotter alert and 911 calls in the 6400 block of Station Street in East Liberty at around 8:30 p.m., according to police.
Neighbors told police that a shooting took place after a dispute and officers discovered a vehicle and a home struck by gunfire.
Residents told investigators that two gunshot victims were driven to local hospitals for treatment.
Police learned that a 19-year-old man whose name was not released had checked into a local hospital in serious condition for treatment.
No other victims were identified.
The second shooting, which is not related, occurred shortly before 9:30 p.m. in the city’s Spring Hill neighborhood.
Police from the Zone 1 station in the North Side responded to a Shotspotter alert for 14 rounds of gunfire along Rhine Place in Spring Hill.
When officers arrived they found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the leg who was in the process of being taken to a hospital by private vehicle for treatment, police said.
Officers applied a tourniquet to the victim’s leg before medics transported him to Allegheny General Hospital in the North Side in stable condition.
Investigators viewed surveillance video from the apartment complex where the shooting took place that showed the victim fighting with a man who pulled out a gun and began firing.
Police were able to to identify the suspect seen on video entering an apartment building following the shooting.
Officers surrounded the building and conducted a door-to-door search.
They found Christoper Shannon, 21, in his mother’s third-floor apartment along with a .40-caliber Smith and Wesson handgun believed to have been used in the shooting, according to a criminal complaint.
Nine .40-caliber shell casings were recovered from the scene. Police said the gun had been reported stolen in Churchill.
Shannon was taken into custody and charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and receiving stolen property, according to court records.
He is in the Allegheny County Jail awaiting arraignment on the charges.
Rhine Place is the same street where a 1-year-old Zykier Young was killed by a stray bullet on Aug. 24 while sleeping.
Surveillance footage led Pittsburgh police to three men allegedly involved in a shootout near the boy’s apartment building.
Andre Crawford, 29, of McKeesport; Marvin Hill, 41; and Devon Thompson, 36, of McKees Rocks have been charged in connection with Young’s death.
