Castle Shannon will be the site of the Allegheny County Health Department’s second covid-19 vaccine dispensary.
It will be staffed by members of Allegheny County Emergency Services who have been trained in storage, handling and administration of the vaccine, according to the county.
Beginning Tuesday, the Castle Shannon dispensary will take those eligible for the vaccine by appointment only inside the Castle Shannon Fire Department Banquet Hall at 3600 Library Road. Appointments are available only for those 65 years and older.
The county said there will be no on-site registration or walk-up appointments. Anyone arriving at the site without an appointment, or who is not 65 and older, will be turned away.
Individuals 65 years and older will be able to register for appointments at the Castle Shannon location online beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Links will also be published at that time on the Health Department’s Covid-19 Vaccine Information website (alleghenycounty.us/COVIDvaccine) and sent through Allegheny Alerts.
Phone registration will be available at 9 a.m. on Tuesday by calling 2-1-1.
As with a Monroeville vaccination dispensary location, the Moderna vaccine will be used in Castle Shannon. Information about registering for the second dose will be provided about 10 days before that dose is due, the county said.
The county is anticipating online appointments will fill quickly. Callers to 2-1-1 should expect wait times “of up to 20 minutes,” according to a news release from the county.
Health Department officials were not available for comment, according to county spokeswoman Amie Downs. A news release stated the Castle Shannon vaccine location “will remain open as long as the department has enough vaccine to support its operation.”
