Gannon named CMO of Jefferson Hospital
Allegheny Health Network has appointed long-time South Hills resident Mark P. Gannon, MD, as chief medical officer of Jefferson Hospital, according to a news release.
In this role, Gannon will lead the medical staff and clinical operations to ensure the highest standards of patient care and safety across the hospital and its affiliated sites in the South Hills of Pittsburgh, Lower Mon Valley and surrounding areas.
According to the release, Gannon joined the staff of Jefferson Hospital in 1993 as a general surgeon. To date, he has held numerous clinical leadership positions, including past roles as the hospital’s chief of surgery and, most recently, as the director of Jefferson’s Comprehensive Breast Program.
“Dr. Gannon is a highly respected clinician and physician leader at Jefferson and an exceptional caregiver for our patients. He will be an outstanding CMO and a passionate advocate for the hospital’s clinical staff, patients and the many communities that we serve,” said Chong Park, MD, president at AHN Jefferson.
A member of AHN’s Jefferson Hills Surgical Specialists, Gannon earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Notre Dame and his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh. He completed his surgical residency at Geisinger Medical Center.
As the hospital’s lead breast surgeon, he has played a central role in developing the program’s clinical protocols and coordinating its team of surgical and medical oncologists, nurses, genetic counselors and patient navigators. When patients are diagnosed with breast cancer, the program’s navigators help to coordinate appointments, schedule additional exams and provide resources to help patients make informed decisions regarding their care.
AHN also expanded its Cancer Institute in 2014 by opening the doors to a new specialized facility at Jefferson where patients can receive advanced cancer treatment and support services at one location within their community. The Cancer Institute at Jefferson gives patients direct access to their entire oncology team as well as primary and specialty care physicians.
“It’s been an absolute honor to serve the patients in this community for nearly two decades,” Gannon said. “In my new role, I look forward to helping further build upon the great legacy of exceptional, patient-centered care and compassion that this hospital and its wonderful caregivers have long provided.”
Gannon is a member of numerous scientific and professional organizations, including the Pennsylvania Medical Society, the Allegheny County Medical Society and the American Society of Breast Surgeons. He also is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and sits on the Jefferson Regional Foundation’s board of directors.
