Family fun and history will come alive when 18th century reenactors host games and open the doors at Greenock Log House in Elizabeth Township the second Saturday of each month this summer.
Children will have opportunities to experience activities similar to those in the late 1700s and 1800s that youngsters did in their limited free time with gatherings of friends and families.
There will be twists as the games and craft projects also will shed light on environmental and conservation, as the early settlers lived a truly sustainable life, said Debbie Popp Gilbert of the Elizabeth Township Historical Society.
Historical society members will take the lead on committees organizing each event that will be held from 1 to 5 p.m., as well conduct tours of the two-story log house built around 1790.
The first event on May 13 will mark the arrival of spring with the traditional celebration as children swing colorful ribbons around the May pole. Children will use recyclable materials to make bird feeders and plant flower seeds in biodegradable pots also as known as ice cream cones.
Children’s agility will be exercised June 10 when they try old-time picnic games like three-legged and sack races and cool-off with ice cream.
Time to reflect on those who served in the nation’s military will be observed July 22 as the 160th Battle of Gettysburg is marked. Reenactors will offer tribute to those who served in the military and their family members who attend.
Activities Aug. 12 will turn domestic as families focused on preserving garden goods and the households engaged in preserving and pickling. Information on herbs for seasoning and health will be offered. Crafting leather will be demonstrated.
Crafters, vendors and reenactors will be featured as Greenock Log House Days will be celebrated from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 23. Vendors may reserve 10 ft by 10 ft spaces for $25 by Aug. 16 or $30 after to Debbie Popp Gilbert, 1109 Sommerset Street, McKeesport, Pa. 15135.
