Eclipse family night
In partnership with the Whitehall Recreation Board, join Whitehall Public Library on April 1 for an eclipse themed Family Night to learn about the upcoming solar eclipse and get free eclipse glasses. The program will start in Snyder Park with up-close viewing of the sun using solar telescopes and other fun eclipse related activities. At 7 p.m., we will move to the community room for a solar observing and eclipse talk given by Larry McHenry, who has been active in amateur astronomy for over 40 years and is a member of the Oil Region Astronomical Society in Western Pennsylvania. The program will include an introduction to solar features visible on the sun and safe solar observing techniques using white-light and H-alpha solar filters. Additionally, we’ll discuss where to go and how to observe the upcoming April 8 total solar eclipse.
In case of rain or bad weather, the entire event will be held in the community room. The event is free. To register, visit whitehallpubliclibrary.org or call 412-882-6622.
South Hills Women’s Club
The South Hills Women’s Club, in its 80th year, will meet on April 18 at Vanadium Woods Lobby, 50 Vanadium Road, Bridgeville, at 8 p.m. A social hour will follow the brief meeting. Whitehall Borough Historical Society
The Whitehall Borough Historical Society will present “World War II Espionage,” German plans for espionage and sabotage in the United States. The principle speaker will be Todd DiPastino, PhD., Yale University, executive director of the Veterans Breakfast Club, and author of seven books including the award winning “Bill Maudin: A Life Up Front.” This presentation will take place on April 28 at 7 p.m. at the Whitehall Community Room.
South Arts Pittsburgh
The Galleria of Mt. Lebanon, 1500 Washington Road, is hosting a Spring Art Show April 5-14 throughout the first floor of the mall. Several art leagues including South Arts Pittsburgh, Whitehall, McMurray Art League, Bethel Park Art League and Photo Section will be participating. Artwork and photos are framed and ready to hang in your home or given as a thoughtful holiday gift.
Cards and matted prints are also available. Cash, checks or credit cards accepted.
South Arts Pittsburgh is hosting a two-day Art Show May 4-5 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Schoolhouse Arts & History Center, 2600 South Park Road, Bethel Park. The Schoolhouse Art Show will include an artists’ market with local vendors displaying/selling their artworks throughout the first floor, and South Arts members’ artwork for sale in one of the classrooms of the historic schoolhouse.
Flea market
A flea market will be held 9 a.m.-2 p.m. April 27 at Jefferson United Presbyterian Church, 716 Gill Hall Road, Jefferson hills.
Book sale
The Friends of Jefferson Hills Public Library are hosting a used book and boutique sale April 18-21 at the library. A preview party is slated for April 18. Tickets are available for purchase at the library for $10. They are $12 on the day of. Fill a bag for $5 or a moving box for $10 on April 21. All boutique items will be half off that day. Cash, check and credit card payments are accepted.
Luncheon, fashion show to raise money for Panhellenic scholarships
The Pittsburgh Alumnae Panhellenic, a chapter of the National Panhellenic Conference, will have its annual scholarship benefit luncheon at 11 a.m. April 13 at the South Hills Country Club in Whitehall.
For the past 107 years, this event has raised funds to support local collegiate members in their academic pursuits. The 2024 event is themed “Raising Strong Women” and will include a fashion show featuring girls through collegians.
The Pittsburgh Alumnae Panhellenic is a fraternal organization comprised of representatives of national sororities who live in and around the Pittsburgh region.
Sorority women, as well as their friends, are encouraged to attend to support the group’s fundraising efforts.
The April event will include a cash bar and raffle auction. Tickets must be purchased by April 1. The cost is $55 for adults, $35 for college students and $20 for children. Reservations can be made at https://tinyurl.com/mvtybh2h through Eventbrite. For details, email papbenefit@gmail.com.
