In brief: Food drive, soup cook-off and more in South Hills

Food drive

Baldwin Borough Police Department has partnered with South hills Interfaith Movement to help alleviate stressors for families in crisis this holiday season. BBPD will serve as a drop-off location for non-perishable food items and personal care items: 3344 Churchview Ave., Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Most needed items for SHIM’s pantries include dried beans, rice, jarred pasta sauce, cereal, soup, flour, sugar, baby food, dog food and personal care items. Blood drive

Sen. Jim Brewster, D-McKeesport, along with Vitalant, will hold a community blood drive from 1-6 p.m. Dec. 20 at Brentwood Public Library, 3501 Brownsville Road. Appointments are strongly recommended by visiting senatorbrewster.com/donateblood.

Soup Cook-off

Whitehall’s Recreations department is partnering with the Whitehall Public Library for a Soup Cook-Off on Jan. 14 in the Whitehall Community Room. Participants will get a spoon and a voting card at the registration table. Contestants will serve up their best soups, chowders and bisques. Interested in entering your soup? Fill out the form online at whitehallboro.org. The top three contestants will receive a prize.

Whitehall Library sing-along

Join Whitehall Public Library for a Christmas carol event that will transform the library into the best chorus hall in the county at 1 p.m. Dec. 12. Local musical duo Al Priano and Marian Bollman will lead a medley of songs sure to make you feel as warm as a chestnut roasting by the fire. There will be cookies, hot chocolate and a gift exchange for all who wish to participate. The event is free but registration is required. Free winter wear pop-up

Baldwin-Whitehall School District will host a free community Pop-Up Shop with cold weather gear on Dec. 13 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at Whitehall Public Library. Open and free to all! Shop for coats, boots, scarves and hats of all sizes.

‘Miracle on Main Street’

South Hills Church of the Nazarene’s Acting Up Club will present the musical “Miracle on Main Street” at 6 p.m. Dec. 9 and 10. The church is at 5601 Library Road, Bethel Park. Admission is free, and a cookie reception will follow the performances to meet and greet the performers and staff.
