In brief: Munhall Road closure, A Taste of Serbia and more in the South Hills
Road closure
West Run Road in Munhall is closed between Union Street and Tioga Street. The closure was slated to begin at 9 a.m. Sept. 30 and is expected to end in December 2021. It is required for the preservation of a culvert, repairs to an inlet, paving and installation of erosion controls and pavement markings.
Traffic will be detoured using Interboro Avenue, Mifflin Road, West Seventh Avenue (Route 837), West Eighth Avenue (Route 837), and West Street.
The project is being done by Pugliano Construction Co., Inc., of Pittsburgh as part of the $1.7 million 2021 Capital Bridges contract.
South Hills Women’s Club
The South Hills Women’s Club will meet at 7 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Scott Park Lodge, Park Drive in Scott Twp. New guests are welcome to attend. This month’s speaker will be Todd DePastino, reflecting on remarkable and harrowing stories of young airmen who barely escaped the war to build houses for the postwar boom. Those interested in joining the club or attending the meeting should call Susan at 412-953-3209.
A Taste of Serbia
A Taste of Serbia 2021 brings back fan favorites’ boneless slow-roasted sliced lamb sandwiches and award-winning 12-ounce haddock filet fish sandwiches at the St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church of McKeesport-Duquesne.
Located at 901 Hartman St. in McKeesport, the two-day event runs from 3 to 7 p.m. on Oct. 1 and from noon to 7 p.m. on Oct. 2. This year, in addition to pre-orders, walk-up orders will be taken while supplies last. Limited outdoor seating is available in the courtyard.
Fish sandwiches and pierogies are available on Friday only, while lamb sandwiches top the menu both days. New this year are cevaps, six grilled skinless meat sausages served with onions, a roll and kajmak spread. Burek, a savory meat and cheese pie in phyllo dough, pleases the discerning palette.
Stuffed cabbage rolls, traditional sauerkraut and red kidney bean soup, halushki, Serbian potato salad and Serbian coleslaw round out the main menu. Unlike mainstream salads prepared with creamy dressings, Serbian salads are mixed with an oil and vinegar dressing.
Sweet treats include apple strudel, palacinke, krofne, pineapple pita, kifle and a bakery sampler. The St. Sava Sundae mounds two scoops of vanilla ice cream with warm apple strudel topping. And, yes, the Church Ladies’ nut rolls and apricot rolls are back.
Cash or credit cards are accepted for walk-up orders. Safety guidelines and restrictions will be followed. Masks are recommended for those who are unvaccinated for covid-19.

Women’s Grief Seminar
A free presentation and Q&A with licensed counselor Jessica Bovard will be offered 10 a.m.-noon Oct. 9 at Gill Hall Volunteer Fire Company in Jefferson Hills.
How do we have hope in the midst of grief, and how can we offer to help those we care for?
Let’s spend time discussing how to grieve wholly and well, and how to support others through their grief. We will talk about how God sees our tears, and how he promises to never leave us alone in our sadness.
Light refreshments will be provided. ASL-interpretation is available. This seminar is free, but RSVP on the Redemption Hill Church website, redemptionhill.church/events.
Art Guild Meeting
The Bethel Park Art Guild will hold its October meeting at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 7 at the Bethel Park Community Center.
The guest speaker for this month is Yelena Lamm, a Russian-born artist – and that’s where she received her fine art education. She moved to Pittsburgh in 1995 where she expanded her art education to graphic arts and design.
She received her degree in graphic design from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. She never stopped painting while she studied graphic design. She continues to paint, exhibit, compete and win awards to this date. Her works, figurative or still life, are where it is her goal, to bring beauty, from the beauty she sees in what surrounds us.
Artists of all levels are welcome.
South Park Women’s Club
The SPWC will hold its 27th Craft Show from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 9 at Broughton Fire Hall, Cochrans Mill Road in South Park.
More than 50 crafters (no vendors) will be on hand to display their crafts. In addition to all crafters, SPWC sponsors a raffle, chance auction, lunch, refreshments and baked goods to enjoy while at the show or to take home. Need a gift for someone? It’s not too early to think Christmas.
All proceeds benefit South Park Women’s Club’s ongoing community activities and three scholarship funds.
• The guest speaker for South Park Women’s Club’s Oct. 18 meeting will be Lorraine Mszanski, executive director of South Park Theater. Mszanski will tell club more about her job, what it entails and maybe even what is coming up for next season. The meeting will take place in the South Park Township Community Center Room at 7 p.m. The evening consists of a guest speaker, a short business meeting and dessert.
Artisan market
A Hallow-Thanks-Mas Holiday artisan festival will take place 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 24 at the West Meeting Center in West Elizabeth. Local crafters and vendors will have Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas items, and there will also be door prizes, food and music. Entry is free.
