Mental health workshop for children
Whitehall Public Library will host a prerecorded digital talk, How to Talk to Children About Mental Health: A Picture Presentation with Dr. Mary Jo ‘Nonnie’ Podgurski at 1 p.m. June 22.
If the past year has taught us anything, it’s that talking about life’s challenging topics is crucial but not always easy. In her “Nonnie Talks” series, using illustrated interactions between two children and an older adult, Dr. Mary Jo Podgurski opens the door to communication between the generations by addressing complex issues with grace, humor, sensitivity and warmth.
In this picture presentation, Nonnie talks you through the process of how to engage children with heavy topics like depression, anxiety, counseling and the stigma often associated with mental illness. With the tips and listening strategies discussed in her talk, parents and guardians will feel more comfortable chatting about the occasional “elephant in the room” and fully embrace Dr. Podgurski’s belief that “each person is a person of worth.”

Summer camp applications open
Jefferson Hills will be offering its summer camp July 5-30 at Gill Hall Park.
The Borough Summer Recreation program is available for children ages 6-10, or those students entering first grade through students entering sixth grade.
Because of the pandemic, changes and safety protocols will be instituted for the protection of campers and counselors alike. Mandatory mask-wearing and social distancing while at camp must be followed. To further ensure camp safety, participants will be grouped into pods of eight students who will act independently from other pods throughout the camp.
Space is limited. Those interested must turn in their application, liability waiver release and $40 payment to the Jefferson Hills Public Library during regular hours. Once all spots are filled, a waiting list will be kept in the event spots open up.
