Jefferson Hills Mayor Cmar challenged by McCaffrey in November election

Jefferson Hills residents will choose between a Democrat incumbent and a Republican challenger as their next mayor in the November election, according to the Allegheny County Office of Elections’ unofficial candidate list.

Here are the nominees and their responses to the election questions posed by South Hills Record.

Jan Cmar

Age: 66

Political party: Democrat

Education: Bachelor of Science, Mansfield University, graduated 1976; Master’s Degree in special education, Duquesne University, graduated 1990

Occupation: Retired teacher, Peters Township School District

If elected, what are two short-term goals? To solve, once and for all, the issue of fire protection in the borough. I have always advocated for opening the Gill Hall Volunteer Fire Company station. We need to resolve the differences for the benefit of homeowners in the Gill Hall Road corridor.

To resurrect the idea of a community center. As recently as two years ago, the borough recreation board had seriously considered various options and had toured community centers in the South Hills. This is something our community needs and deserves.

If elected, what is one long-term goal? My vision (is that) vibrant, forward-moving communities like Jefferson Hills need dedicated responsive leadership. Our growth gives us a new set of challenges and opportunities. We need to continue planning for the future and recognize the needs of our ever-changing population. I have the dedication and experience to be a part of that future.

How do you plan to communicate with constituents and involve them in the decision-making process? I am available 24/7/365 to speak with our residents. I have taken messages from my personal email account, my borough email account and my cell phone. I continually interact with residents, perform marriage ceremonies – with proceeds donated to local organizations – and volunteer at community events.

Occupation: Salon owner/hairstylist

If elected, what are two short-term goals? To improve professionalism among elected officials and to develop a strong working relationship with our police department and to help them going forward into the future.

If elected, what is one long-term goal? A long-term goal for me is to help bring new business into our growing community. They can help to offset taxes and bring more jobs for residents.

How do you plan to communicate with constituents and involve them in the decision-making process? I would be able to communicate with residents via email, phone and social media. I can also be available to meet with residents and listen to their needs and concerns and help to find a solution.
