Man injured during fight Sunday at Baldwin tavern dies
A Pittsburgh man who got into a fight at a bar in Baldwin borough late Sunday night has died from the injuries he suffered, according to authorities.
Mark Thompson, 51, was pronounced dead shortly after 4 p.m. on July 22 at Allegheny General Hospital, according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office.
The fight occurred at around 11 p.m. on July 18 at the Loose Moose Saloon along Brownsville Road in Baldwin.
The medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of Thompson’s death.
According to a criminal complaint, Thompson was unconscious and bleeding when police were called and somebody at the bar had begun performing CPR on him, Tribune-Review news partners WPXI-TV reported.
Witnesses told police that Thompson was trying to break up a fight between two men when Zachary Blake, the brother of one of the men, punched Thompson in the face, the TV station reported.
When Thompson fell to the ground, Blake got on top of him and continued punching him several more times in the face and then kicked him in the face, according to the complaint.
Blake, 22, told police that his brother was fighting with Thompson and he intervened to protect his sibling. He said he punched Thompson “once or twice,” the complaint stated.
Prior to Thompson’s death, Blake was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, harassment and disorderly conduct, according to court records.
He was released from the Allegheny County Jail after posting a $25,000 bond. He faces an Aug. 3 preliminary on those charges.
Information about what additional charges Blake will face is not yet available.
